    MOBO Awards 2020

Satore Studio teamed up with CC-Lab for the return of the MOBO Awards following the three-year hiatus. As this was the first year, the MOBO’s transitioned from a live format to a virtual format, Satore Studio’s experience in developing virtual productions alongside the creative company CC-Lab in producing a realistic-looking ceremony with multiple video playbacks during the virtual ceremony. Collaborating with Brompton Technologies for their Brompton LED processing providing Universal Pixels (UP) to deliver realistic looking, multiple video playbacks throughout the virtual ceremony.

Tupac Martir wanted to elevate this years’ presentation of the MOBO’s using the work done by Satore Studio in virtual production and elevate it using the year of virtual production experience working along still imagery. Brompton’s OSCA (On Screen Colour Adjustment) and ChromaTune were critical for effective colour management in the vitality as the screen was used as a light source. Martir emphasises that whilst an image can look correct on the camera’s computer screen, and it can look entirely wrong. Thus, the use of high-quality LED processors allows Martir’s vision to get a more familiar look to that perfect on-camera look.

Creative Director Tupac Martir’s vision for the MOBO Awards was created using UP provided high-quality LED screens running on Brompton Tessera SX40 LED processors. Phil Mercer from Universal Pixels says that it was essential to deliver Martir’s creative and technical requirements, as UP played a crucial role in providing the highest-quality visuals during the show’s shooting.

  • Theatre in the age of virtual reality | Cosmos Within Us

Theatre in the age of virtual reality | Cosmos Within Us

Traditional theatre has been making use of all sorts of effects ranging from lighting to sounds for years in its production of work. These effects are added on to make the experiences more immersive for its audiences. Technologies offer a different way in adding an extra aspect to these performances.

In recent years, the performance industry has been experimenting with immersive technologies including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (XR) technologies to establish new mediums that can transform art. Satore Studio is pushing the boundaries of technology in combination with the traditional to reach new dimensions.

Satore Studio’s joint production with Satore Tech and a_BAHN on Cosmos Within Us blurs the boundaries between VR and performance. The participants are invited into the mind of Aiken, a 60-year old man living with Alzheimer’s who is trying to hold onto the last of his childhood memories.

“We knew that we wanted the person in the experience-wearing the headset- to realise different sounds based on their position and receive the voice of the actor directly into their ears, while the rest of the sounds come from an environmental layer”

Tupac Martir, Cosmos Within Us Director

The production incorporates the use of voiceover artists, musicians and composers working within 5×5 space featuring 360-audio sound design. Cosmos Within Us is performed in front of an audience ranging from ten to 150 viewing the entire production, with the visuals driven entirely by one audience member wearing a headset.

  • Cinematic Lightscape for These New Puritans

Cinematic Lightscape for These New Puritans

In support of the sister release to 2019’s LP Inside The Rose, February saw the digital unveiling of These New Puritans’ (TNP) 19-track album, The Cut (2016-2019). Made up of new songs, orchestral interludes, reworkings and remixes of past material, the tracks were brought to life on stage with a captivating production design.

After six weeks of preparation, the band played London’s Barbican Centre, a venue chosen for its “brutality” according to the band’s drummer and Creative Director, George Barnett. In partnership with twin brother Jack, the electronic experimentalists have already enjoyed a decade of working with Satore Studio Founder, Martir.

“Video was very important in this instance. All of TNP previous shows have been primarily based around light, so we wanted to add an element of video yet not rely on it as a constant throughout the performance and allow the visuals to differ in style. The combination of pre-recorded material, visuals created in Unreal and TouchDesigner, and an intrinsic lightshow gave us the final looks desired.

    Let it Rain

Satore Studio was involved with the presentation of the latest collection from MCM (Spring/Summer 19)  in the No. 94 edition of Pitti Uomo in Florence. An interesting catwalk with a lighting design that set the mood to tell the story behind the collection.  The finale of the show had clouds moved back to form rain, creating a pillar of light and moisture in the centre of the space which then became a clear sky.
