Following Cosmos Within Us PGA nomination, Zoe Mutter examines the piece that birthed a new genre – coined as Performative R.

Cosmos Within Us – an immersive virtual reality creation with a performance art twist, experienced by a headset wearer whilst an audience enjoys a behind-the-scenes insight.”

Experienced by a single ‘inter-actor’ wearing a headset, the story plays out within the virtual world they explore, whilst simultaneously being presented to an audience, who enjoy a behind-the-scenes view of the performers and the process involved in creating the piece as well as viewing what the inter-actor sees on a screen.

Transforming a solitary virtual experience into a more expansive performance, Cosmos Within Us has spawned a new genre – Performative-R – and Satore Studio’s creative director, Tupac Martir, is excited about its potential future applications.

“There’s been a lot of talk about how to bring cinema into VR. We wanted to explore how we could introduce live performance with a cinematic feel, using different techniques to make it a 360-degree type of show, in the same way you would do in a massive theatre,” says Martir.

“We wanted to create a performance not only for the person in the headset but for an audience too, all driven by the headset wearer. It was important not just to do it as a gimmick; we had to create a powerful narrative and experience.”
